Starring by Freelance Whales
This is the other track I’ve been listening to a ton. Sure, the music is a little precious, that I can’t deny. But I stayed up an extra few hours Sunday night consuming whatever tracks I could because I got that excited about this band. It’s been a while since that’s happened.
Freelance Whales - Generator ^ First Floor
Found this via PMA yesterday and it had my head bobbing up and down pretty soon after it started. They’re playing at Great Scott next Thursday (10/29) if anyone’s interested…
i’ve been solely listening to this album for the last two days. wish i could go with…:(
Frightened Rabbit - Swim Until You Can’t See Land
This track is growing on me but I am a little fearful in anticipation of the new Frightened Rabbit. I loved the last one way too much and they probably won’t be able to live up to my hopes and dreams for album #3. We will see…
Swim Until You Can’t See Land - Frightened Rabbit
new Frightened Rabbit. very nice. can’t wait for the new record.
“Perfect Machine” by Big Spider’s Back
I love how simple this is, both in the synth-driven instrumentation and the lyrics. Quite obviously influenced by Animal Collective, the song needles its way into your head, refusing to let go.
Mythomania by Cryptacize
This band is so cute I want to punch myself in the face. Okay, not really, but opening for Sufjan on Sunday they played a song called Cosmic Sing-A-Long(!), and if I was feeling more curmudgeonly I probably would’ve punched the drunk girl behind me in the face. Obviously I wasn’t feeling curmudgeonly, and I liked their performance enough to check out some of their music. This is my favorite song of the album, and it’s been stuck in my head for a few days. I definitely had one of those “singing out loud in public when you think you’re alone, except there is someone there” moments. Very awkward; almost as awkward as that last sentence.
Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right by Bob Dylan
It’s strange I never went through a big Dylan phase considering so much of what I listen to was influenced by him. Take this song for example. Listening to it today I thought to myself, “This sounds like The Tallest Man On Earth” when obviously it should be the other way around. Travesties like this aside, maybe it’s nice to have massive musical blind spots if only so I can blown away later.
This video makes me even more excited to see Sufjan on Sunday. Sure, it’s a departure from Illinois/Seven Swans/Michigan, but it could translate into an even more exciting live show.
I know this playlist is called late afternoon in the city, but it was a perfect way to start my Sunday morning in the city. “Small room acoustic” is a spot on description.
